The links between poverty and environmental degradation are explored briefly, through examples from developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. This is particularly relevant to a country like Sri Lanka where natural resource use and abuse is often triggered by poverty.
Issange Apayala (Shrimp Fever) Ecuador/50 mins
A critical view of the prawn farming industry in Ecuador in Latin America, it shows how the industry has devastated coastal ecosystems and impoverished local communities while making quick money for a handful of investors. The lessons of Ecuador apply equally well to Sri Lanka and other Asian countries that have been gripped by shrimp fever in the 1990s – with similar results.

Taking the situation of women in two specific locations – in the low-lying Maldive islands and in Singrauli in India – this film shows how industrial development is impacting them both directly and indirectly. It’s an indictment of the modern industrial world driven by fossil fuels that have triggered global warming. Filmed over several months, this is a dramatically powerful documentary.
Sathwa Rahas Pareekshakayo: Kesbewo (Animal Detectives: Turtles)
Sri Lanka, Maldives/25 mins
This investigative film looks at the illegal trade in turtle products in Sri Lanka, which threatens five species of marine turtles found in the Indian Ocean. Posing as traders, two representatives of the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) of the UK uncover how turtles shells are smuggled from Maldives to Sri Lanka, and how turtle shell products are made and sold in the open market in Sri Lanka in spite of it being totally illegal. This film created a public outcry in Sri Lanka when it was first screened in 1995.

Presents successful grassroots initiatives of six community groups in Nigeria, Colombia, Panama, India, Latvia and South Africa. In each case, it demonstrates how local people have been able to resolve environmental problems, or to fight for their rights to a clean and healthy environment.

Filmed in the Philippines and Thailand where indiscriminate use of agrochemicals have created environmental and health problems.

This film, made in India, looks at how the involvement of local women farmers can increase not only yields, but also help conserve genetic diversity of crops.
