The Sri Lanka Environmental Television Project launched a highly acclaimed international series of television documentaries on natural environment and man's place in Nature on October 31, 2002.

The Global Family series was produced jointly by NHK of Japan and TV Ontario of Canada in the early 1990s. It has been filmed on all five continents and in numerous locations all over the world.

The 20-part series has been versioned into Sinhala by SLETP to make it more accessible to Sri Lankan audiences. It is called Mihikathage Daruwo in Sinhala. Versioning into Sinhala was supported by a grant from the Public Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund of Japan.

The Sinhala series was launched at a public meeting and screening held at the Sausiripaya (ICTAD) Auditorium, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7 on 31 October 2002. His Excellency Seiichiro Otsuka, the Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka, was the chief guest on this occasion.

The Global Family is a truly global series of natural history programmes, exploring the diversity and wonders of Nature on planet Earth, looking at how humans are part of the Global Family of Life, and assessing their impact on other members of the Global Family.
